Skill 26B
Weight: Kilograms
Kilogram means (1000 grams) and is a weight component used for measuring heavier objects in the metric system.  Since the metric system is not commonly used in the United States, it is more difficult for U.S. students to master.  While a gram weighs about 1/30th of an ounce, a kilogram is 1000 times more and weighs a little more than 2 lbs. Here we want to see if your child understands the approximate weight of 1 kilogram by comparing it to objects that are either much heavier or much lighter than 1 kilogram (2 lbs).  If a U.S. child really knows  that 1 kilogram is about 2 lbs, there really shouldn't be too much hesitation as these are easy comparison problems.  If there is much hesitation - click the worksheet link for practice.
